Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield had a lot to unpack in a recent appearance on the YNK Podcast. Mayfield, whose stint as the Browns' starting quarterback ended effectively the moment Deshaun Watson put pen on paper in a lucrative — and controversial —  deal, spoke about what to expect of him in terms of gaining approval of the guys in the locker room, assuming he lands on another team (h/t Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk).

“I’m not going to force it. I’m going to be myself,” Mayfield said. “Because I feel like I tried to force it when things on the field weren’t going well, like in the past couple of years. I feel like I’m going to go in there and be myself, because that’s worked for me in the past. I’m going to go in with the same work ethic and mentality. And if they don’t like me, that’s fine. But when I step on the field and I play as confident as I am and what I think I’m going to do on the field the next time I get a chance to do it, I’ll earn the respect of the guys who didn’t appreciate it from the beginning.

“And if I’m worried about getting them to like me, what am I doing? They don’t care if I like them either. They want their quarterback to win. They’re trying to get a paycheck. If their team wins, they get paid. So the guys who don’t really personally like me, that’s fine. But I have to have their respect. And the way I do that is just working my ass off, being myself. Because you can get sniffed out in a f—ing heartbeat if you’re fake. They’ll sniff that out quick.”

Mayfield is reportedly being shopped by the Browns, with the quarterback having requested a trade back in March when he felt that Cleveland was serious about bringing over Watson to The Land. His tenure with the Browns has been an up-and-down thus far. He led the team to a playoff appearance in 2020– the franchise's first in nearly two full decades — but couldn't duplicate it in a disappointing 2021 campaign, though he had to play through injuries.

Since being taken first overall by the Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft, Mayfield has racked up career numbers of 14,125 passing yards to go with 92 touchdowns against 56 interceptions. He is sporting a 61.6 career completion percentage, which took a dip after a letdown 2021 season.

The former Oklahoma Sooners gunslinger is entering the 2022 season without a contract beyond next season. He is set to earn $18.858 million this year, money that is fully guaranteed, but there's just no certainty at the moment on which uniform will he be wearing once Week 1 rolls around in September.

Baker Mayfield has recently said that he feels the Seattle Seahawks is a likely landing spot for him. That makes sense, considering that Seattle had just let go of now-former franchise quarterback Russell Wilson. The Seahawks currently have Drew Lock atop the quarterback pecking order, but he doesn't have the experience and success, relatively speaking, that Mayfield has in the NFL.

A change of scenery for the Browns' signal-caller could be coming soon, and with Mayfield's resentment towards the team's management coming into full view, it's looking like it would just be a matter of time before Cleveland finally finds his next destination.
