First-year head coach Freddie Kitchens is mulling over a decision to keep three quarterbacks on his Cleveland Browns roster, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

“I was in Arizona when we carried two quarterbacks, and we lost one and then we lost one in the game — the most nightmarish situation that you can have,” Kitchens told reporters on Tuesday. “Two weeks in a row, we signed a quarterback on Wednesday or Tuesday and played with him on Sunday. I do not want to be in that situation.”

“We like [AAF pick-up] Garrett [Gilbert],” Kitchens said. “I like Garrett on what he has done up to this point. We have not even started playing preseason yet. I do not know about the final [roster]. I do not want to crown him just yet.”

Kitchens, 44, was hired by Cleveland to be the new head coach in January of this year after last season when he spent the tumultuous 2018 year first as the running backs coach and later offensive coordinator.

It's not uncommon for teams to hold three quarterbacks; however, the Browns would be missing out on a possible backup in another area of need by holding onto a third shot-caller.

Former number-one overall selection Baker Mayfield, the Heisman Trophy winner out of Oklahoma, is the No. 1 option for Kitchens and the Browns offense. After Mayfield, though, likely comes veteran QB Drew Stanton, who signed a two-year deal with the organization in 2018. The Browns signed undrafted free agent David Blough out of Purdue in May and brought in 28-year-old now-defunct AAF vet Garrett Gilbert into camp, too.
