Cleveland Browns center JC Tretter underwent a knee procedure recently that cleaned out loose bodies and eased discomfort, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. The operation is expected to keep him out of the mix for only the next few weeks, keeping his availability for Week 1 on track.

Tretter has not missed a snap as the team’s center since he arrived with the organization in 2017. He previously had spent three years with the Green Bay Packers, but he has blossomed in his role with the Browns, which also includes a stint as the president of the NFLPA.

In addition to Tretter’s absence, defensive end Myles Garrett was also missing from practice Friday due to a hamstring ailment. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski stated that he was not concerned about Garrett’s injury, per ProFootballTalk, and that he is not expected to remain out for long.

Cleveland is slated to open the 2020 season on Sept. 13 when they travel to take on the Baltimore Ravens. With the knee ailment expected to keep him out for just a couple weeks, Tretter should be able to continue his consecutive snaps streak; had the preseason still been in play, he likely would have missed at least two weeks.

Behind Tretter on the depth chart is undrafted rookie Willie Wright, whom the team inked out of Tulsa. There are already key new faces on the Cleveland offensive line with rookie Jedrick Wills Jr. taking over to protect Baker Mayfield’s blindspot, while Jack Conklin was brought aboard during free agency to sure up the right side of the line.

Alex Van Pelt is entering his first season as Cleveland’s offensive coordinator and is largely tasked with making an offense full of talented individual pieces click. While there are flashier names, the health of Tretter will be imperative to making the machine spin.
