As part of realizing their dream of a complete rebuild under head coach Fred Hoiberg, the Chicago Bulls are likely to waive point guard Rajon Rondo, according to K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune.

Having traded Jimmy Butler to the Minnesota Timberwolves and gotten some youth in return, the Bulls plan to take the next step by paying only $3 million of the $13.4 million Rondo is owed by waiving him this season.

Chicago was intent on keeping Rondo, but mostly in efforts to package him in the Butler deal, but that fell futile during trade negotiations.

“Rondo has been included in some recent trade proposals because of the way his contract is structured, including some larger scenarios with Butler before the deal with the Timberwolves materialized,” wrote Johnson. “Barring an unexpected trade opportunity materializing Friday, expect Rondo to be waived.”

“Sources said the Bulls and Rondo’s representatives discussed re-signing the veteran guard at a lower salary. But that’s a long shot scenario.”

Dwyane Wade will likely be seeking a buyout as well, but due to the hefty $23.8 million salary, it would make matters rather difficult for the team, who is expecting him to suit up during the season.
