The Arizona Cardinals are coming off a rough season in which injuries to some of the team's best players derailed any chance of the team competing for a playoff spot in the NFC. The most costly loss was running back David Johnson going down with a wrist injury which resulted in the team acquiring Adrian Peterson from the New Orleans Saints.

Although Peterson had a few solid games for Arizona, the Cardinals simply didn't need him with the expected return of Johnson next season. That being said, the team releases Peterson on Tuesday didn't come as a surprise, via NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

After a forgettable first season not playing in a Minnesota Vikings uniform, Peterson will be looking for employment in the NFL once again. The Saints experiment failed miserably while the Cardinals stint went well at times, but clearly wasn't a place he'd be long-term with Johnson now the face of the franchise in Arizona.

Despite not blowing anyone away with his performance this past season, Peterson did prove that can still be a force to be reckoned with when given the carries. However, it remains to be seen whether another team will jump at the opportunity to sign the veteran back as he's still an injury concern and could be a locker room problem like he turned out to be in New Orleans.

At this point, no team has been rumored to be interested in signing the soon-to-be 33-year-old. Peterson, however, wants to play for the Houston Texans if the opportunity arises. The four-time All-Pro called playing in Houston a “dream scenario,” but only time will tell if the interest is mutual.
