The St. Louis Cardinals played a doubleheader on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In the early game, Cardinals slugger Paul Goldschmidt blasted his 14th home run of the season, powering St. Louis to a 3-1 victory. He finished the game with three RBI. Then in the night cap, Goldschmidt was back at it again.

He connected on not one, but two more home runs. In the process, the Cardinals first baseman drove in five more runs. In doing so, he accomplished something not seen since 1999.

Goldschmidt became the first Cardinals player since Fernando Tatis in 1999 to drive in eight runs in a single day. That was so long ago, Tatis' son, Fernando Tatis Jr. is now a superstar in the league.

Goldschmidt is having a monster year for St. Louis. We are just past a third of the way through the season and he has 16 home runs and 56 RBI already. The 34-year-old is hitting .346 with a 1.067 OPS thus far this season. That firmly places him in the early race for National League MVP.

However, the Cardinals will likely need to keep winning for him to stay in that conversation. At the time of this writing, the late game is in the sixth inning with St. Louis leading 7-1. If they sweep the doubleheader, they'll improve to 37-27 this season. Thanks in large part to Milwaukee's massive slide, the Cards will hold a two-game division lead.

Phillies' Bryce Harper, Padres' Manny Machado and the Mets' Pete Alonso are all also having monster seasons. The NL MVP race will likely come down to September.
