Boston Celtics president Danny Ainge made a case for keeping soon-to-be restricted free agent Terry Rozier in “the right role” next season:

“You guys know I’m a big fan of Terry’s,” Ainge said on Wednesday, according to Tom Westerholm of MassLive. “I don’t always agree with how everybody handles the media, just like they probably don’t agree with how I handle the media and things that I say. We don’t always think alike, that’s what makes the game fun. But I’m a big fan of Terry’s, I think that if Terry was in the right circumstance and the right role, I think he would love playing in Boston, is my opinion. And if not, then I think Terry would let me know that. But Terry and I have a very good relationship, as Terry does with Brad as well.”

The impending situation with Kyrie Irving's free agency will have to be the first domino to fall before Ainge determines what role Rozier could play for the Celtics next season.

Rozier recently said on ESPN that he wouldn't see himself going back to the Celtics under the current roster construction, and likely even less if Irving returns for 2019-20.

Irving is reported to have a “low” probability to stay with the team in free agency, which could open the door for a Rozier return, but the 6-foot-1 dynamo could want a drastic raise to stay for the long term, considering he only made $3 million last season and will be a highly coveted young talent for teams looking for an up-and-coming point guard.
