Kyrie Irving’s new number with his new team has been revealed. After wearing No. 2 for his entire Cleveland Cavaliers — and NBA — career, the brand new Boston Celtics point guard will now wear No. 11.

Irving wasn’t going to be able to wear No. 2 with the Celtics as it is the retired number of legendary Celtics coach/general manager Red Auerbach. Irving wore No. 1 at Duke and No. 10 for Team USA, but both of those numbers are retired as well.

So Kyrie will instead wear the still-available No. 11, which, apart from equaling two, is also the number he wore at St. Patrick's High School.

There haven’t been a lot of notable Celtics to wear the No. 11 over the years. Hall-of-Famer Bob McAdoo was probably the best player to ever wear it, but he did so for just 20 games. Other vaguely notable Celtics to wear the number were Dana Barros, Glen “Big Baby” Davis, Courtney Lee and Evan Turner.

It’s obviously way too early to tell if Irving can craft a Celtics career great enough to get the No. 11 hung up into the rafters. But if he can continue on his current trajectory for even a few years in Boston, he can very conceivably become the greatest ever Celtic to wear the No. 11.
