Kyrie Irving's impending free-agent decision is expected to hound the Boston Celtics as a season-long storyline after turning down a contract extension this summer in hopes for a more lucrative deal next year.

The Celtics came a game shy of the NBA Finals without their two best players in Irving and Gordon Hayward, but they will ultimately go as far as Irving can take them, making this storyline one to watch closely throughout the season.

per Jay King of The Athletic:

“While the Celtics have already shown they can make a deep playoff run without Irving and fellow injured All-Star Gordon Hayward, the reality is Irving’s decision in July looms as the first major threat to Boston’s potential staying power. The uncertainty around his future promises to persist as one of this season’s steady story lines.”

Irving has been rumored to be seeking a potential move to the New York Knicks, based on the proximity to his home state of New Jersey. The recent Jimmy Butler trade request only fanned the rumors of a potential partnership with Irving in New York, one which might have to wait a year to take place and flourish in The Big Apple.

The Celtics' best bet is ultimate success, as reaching the Finals and potentially conquering an NBA title will make Irving think twice before choosing to part ways, knowing he's able to lead a team to the promised land right where he stands.
