After signing a two-year, $18.9 million contract with the Boston Celtics, Tristan Thompson became a US citizen.

Thompson, who was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, came to America on a student visa when he played his college ball at Texas.

This is a great moment for Tristan Thompson and his family. The veteran big man can now start the next chapter of his NBA career with the Celtics knowing that he's an American citizen and accomplished a big goal many people strive for.

The Cleveland Cavaliers drafted Thompson with the fourth overall pick in the 2011 draft. The 29-year-old finished his Cavs career with averages of 9.4 points and 8.7 rebounds in 619 games. He was also part of the 2016 championship team.

Thompson is joining a Celtics team which got all the way to the 2020 Eastern Conference Finals. Boston lost to the Miami Heat in six games at Walt Disney World in the NBA bubble.

The Celtics needed a rebounding force, which is why Danny Ainge went after Thompson in free agency. Double T put up 12.0 points and 10.1 rebounds per game for the Cavs in 2019-20 while shooting 51.2 percent from the field.

The Celtics are certainly excited to be adding a player who can give them a double-double on a nightly basis, especially since the team lost small forward Gordon Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets and traded Enes Kanter to the Portland Trail Blazers.
