The Los Angeles Chargers went against the grain of the offensive-minded NFL and hired former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley as their head coach.

On the daily Locked On Chargers podcast, Daniel Wade and David Droegemier explained what the Chargers are getting with their new head coach.

Wade: If you read what people have to say about this relatively unknown guy (Brandon Staley), only one season as the Rams defensive coordinator, all he did was lead the number one defense in the NFL and it really was not that close in terms of total yardage. As far as passing yardage, as far as points allowed per game at the top of the NFL, it was a well-balanced defense as well because they were third in the NFL in stopping the run too. They were number one in stopping the pass and number three at stopping the run.

All this guy did was come in and be one of the best coordinators in the NFL. One of the things that he and Sean McVay go back and forth about is how to beat each other. This is a guy who wants to sit there and play the chess matchup. He wants to line his guys up in the best way to take on offenses. He is one of those guys as Tom Telesco put it, he is the gym rat version of a football coach. The guy just never gets out of the office. He is extremely detailed oriented and is going to be a very organized guy and he has a lot of plans for the Chargers.
