Just a few weeks ago, it looked like Los Angeles Chargers tight end Antonio Gates' career might be over. But then his old team came calling and he jumped at the opportunity. The Chargers initially decided not to bring back Gates this offseason, but the plans changed when tight end Hunter Henry went down with a knee injury.

Gates wasn't signed until after the preseason was finished, but he played in Week 1 and finished with two receptions for 16 yards. Gates was very grateful just to be back on the team where he has been since 2003, according to Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times.

“Ultimately, when you step away, reality hits you,” Gates said. “And [then] you step back into this situation. I think you really understand and respect the opportunity.”

Gates is a trusted pass-catching target for Phillip Rivers and a longtime fan favorite. The fans were clearly excited to have him back, giving him the loudest standing ovation during pregame introductions.

Gates looked a step slow last year, which was a big reason why the team didn't bring him back initially. This year, Rivers thinks Gates looks stronger than last year and is excited about what he can provide to the team.

“I honestly think he has more juice right now than he did at the end of last year,” Rivers said, “which makes sense because he was able to be fresh all preseason and all training camp.”

Chargers coach Anthony Lynn was impressed with what he saw out of Gates, but he knows there is a long way to go.

“I know he’s a Hall of Famer, but he’s still gotta get some work done,” Lynn said. “The more practice he gets the better shape he’ll be in. He’s just going to be that much better.”

Gates and the Chargers face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
