The Los Angeles Chargers just hired Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley as their new head coach, and Derwin James had a simple reaction.

Like every other person in the football community, James saw the reports about the hiring of Staley and was clearly happy as he reacted with a simple emoji.

After the Chargers officially announced the hiring of Staley, James elaborated on his thoughts:

Brandon Staley served the past season as the defensive coordinator of the Rams, developing the top-ranked defense in the NFL behind star defensive tackle Aaron Donald and cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

Staley's defensive squad pushed the Rams to a 10-6 season and a wild card playoff win over the Seattle Seahawks–a game they were not expected to win–before the team exited the postseason with a loss to the Green Bay Packers.  Staley's Rams' defense ranked No. 1 in efficiency, yards allowed per game and points allowed per game in what was his first year as a coordinator in the league.

Staley inherits a promising young stud at quarterback in Justin Herbert to go along with Keenan Allen and Austin Ekeler on offense. He also inherits a Chargers defensive unit that includes defensive end Joey Bosa and safety Derwin James.

Moreover, Staley will have the No. 13 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft to add yet another franchise cornerstone to the roster.

That alone gives Staley plenty of playmakers with star potential as he attempts to challenge the better teams in a loaded AFC with the Chargers.

Staley has the difficult task of contending with the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West, but there is plenty of talent throughout the roster to make for an exciting fresh start for the new coach.
