The Los Angeles Chargers are currently in the midst of negotiating a new deal for running back Melvin Gordon. It seems he is willing to take a patient approach until the matter is resolved.

Gordon has made it clear he would like a long-term contract or be traded if the Chargers are not willing to pay him. His agent Fletcher Smith said during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he is willing to sit out for as long as possible:

“He’s prepared to sit, and we’ll take it day by day, week by week and see how things go,” Smith said. “But at this time, if he can’t anything done, he certainly won’t be at training camp, and he’s prepared to sit as long as he has to.”

Gordon has done what he can to indicate that he is all in on his decision. the onus now falls on the chargers to decide if they really want to get a deal done. Otherwise, they may risk losing their workhorse back for the 2019 NFL season and beyond.

There is no question that Gordon is certainly deserving of a new deal. He is currently slated to make just $5.6 million in 2019. This comes after he finished the 2018 campaign with 885 yards and 10 touchdowns while hauling in 50 receptions for 490 yards and four touchdowns despite missing four games with a knee injury.

Unfortunately, Gordon is still subject to fines since he is currently under contract. Regardless, his plans to sit out will shift the focus to the Chargers' front office to make something happen or risk losing one of the most important players on offense.
