Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers gave his thoughts about the Melvin Gordon situation and with his comments, he seems to be trying to make everyone happy. Gordon didn't report to the camp with the rest of the team in hopes that he can get a new long term deal with the team.

Rivers knows that replacing a star like Gordon won't be easy, but he has confidence in the rest of the running backs on the roster.

Rivers also thinks that this a good chance for the rest of the running backs to get some reps and also improve their game.

“They’re going to get a lot of work,” Rivers said, via the Los Angeles Times. “It certainly is a deep position for us, and those guys all love to play and work hard. We love Melvin, but we’re going to go with what we’ve got. It’s a pretty dang good group.”

There can be some arguments made that if Gordon does holdout into the regular season, the team might not miss him as much as some think. Last Austin Ekeler was strong filing in for Gordon and being his backup rushing 106 times for 554 yards and three touchdowns.

If Gordon were to holdout in the regular season and Ekeler continues to play strong like last year, it might actually hurt Gordon's chance at a long term contract, because the team could decide that he doesn't need to be in their long term plans at such a high salary cap number.
