Defending a title in a league like the NFL is difficult but still possible. In fact, only a total of 7 different NFL teams have won back to back Super Bowl championships in league history. The Kansas City Chiefs aim to add another number to that tally by the end of the upcoming season as they are set to defend their Super Bowl LIV title in 2020.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid sounded off on how his men have prepared to face the daunting task ahead of them:

“You always worry about guys celebrating and coaches celebrating and all this, well there wasn’t a whole lot of celebrating going on because we were confined to our homes,” Reid said. “The thing I can go off of now is just the way the guys have worked and they’ve worked their tail off. I’m proud of them for that. They came back with a great attitude. I think everybody — probably around the league this is true, but everybody is just so glad to get back playing. There’s a great energy.”

The common denominator among repeating Super Bowl champions is that they were able to successfully retain most of the players from their championship squad. The Chiefs have done exactly that during the offseason and extended their main stars in quarterback Patrick Mahomes, defensive tackle Chris Jones, and tight end Travis Kelce.

However, their Super Bowl aspirations won't come without hurdles moving forward. Several title contenders have also stacked their own rosters in hopes of dethroning the heavily-favored Chiefs. Despite the stiffer competition, the reigning champions are looking to stay focused on the ultimate goal and leave their mark in football history once more.
