The Kansas City Chiefs took care of Patrick Mahomes, making him the highest-paid athlete in sports history. And now the Chiefs are turning their attention to another marquee member of their roster. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Chris Jones and Kansas City have begun to engage in contract talks.

Rather than let Jones test free agency, the Chiefs chose to place their lone franchise tag on the Pro Bowl interior defender. While Kansas City was content with tagging Jones, the former second-round pick was less than enthused at receiving the tag.

As of this moment, Jones has yet to sign his franchise tender and has hinted at possibly sitting out the 2020 season if he doesn't receive a long-term deal. Given the fact he received the franchise tag, the Chiefs have until July 15 to finalize a multi-year deal with Jones.

In his first four seasons in the NFL, Jones has become arguably the most vital player on Kansas City's defense. The Mississippi State product has combined for a total of 24.5 sacks, 27 tackles for loss, 49 quarterback hits, and three forced fumbles in the past two seasons alone.

Above all, Jones played a prominent role in the Chiefs being able to win a Super Bowl in 2019. Even though he didn't record a sack in the Super Bowl, Jones wreaked havoc on the San Francisco 49ers' offensive line and deflected three passes.

Jones has viewed himself as someone that deserves to be one of the highest-paid defensive players in the NFL. On the other hand, the Chiefs haven't shown that they are willing to give him the number he desires.

Despite Kansas City's late efforts, it seems highly unlikely that Jones will be playing under a new contract in 2020.
