The Kansas City Chiefs know they have a special quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, so they are preparing accordingly.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach told Kevin Clark of The Ringer that the club has been doing the necessary preparatory work for Mahomes' second contract since before last season, and the way Kansas City went about signing wide receiver Sammy Watkins in March 2018 was evidence of that:

“We were already doing the deal assuming Pat would be an elite-level quarterback,” Veach said of the Watkins signing. “We were already doing our contracts to fit a potentially big contract. When he was a rookie, as a backup, we were already doing our structures to fit. That’s how much we believed in Patrick.”

Mahomes still has two years remaining on his rookie deal and is making just $645,000 this season and is scheduled to earn $735,000 in 2020, but that isn't stopping the Chiefs from getting an extension ready sooner rather than later:

“We will not be caught with our pants down,” added Veach.

Mahomes is coming off a 2018 campaign in which he threw for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 66.0 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 113.8 en route to a Pro Bowl appearance, a First-Team All-Pro selection and an MVP award.

The 23-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Texas Tech, was originally selected by Kansas City with the 10th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft and spent his rookie campaign learning behind veteran quarterback Alex Smith.

Following the 2017 season, the Chiefs traded Smith in order to pave the way for Mahomes to start.
