It appears that quarterback Matt Moore is returning to the Kansas City Chiefs after all, albeit with their practice squad.

The reigning Super Bowl champions are reportedly signing the 36-year old signal caller to their practice squad, according to according to Herbie Teope.

This means that Moore will take one of six veteran sports in Kansas City’s 16-team practice squad lineup. It was earlier reported that Moore had been released by the team, with another veteran in Chad Henne winning the backup quarterback spot to reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, leaving his status uncertain.

Moore played just four games for the Chiefs last season, but played a crucial role after Mahomes suffered a dislocated kneecap in their Week 7 game against the Denver Broncos. In his three games under center for Kansas City, Moore completed 91 passes and had four touchdowns and no interceptions, while completing 64.8% of his passes. The Chiefs, however, struggled without their star quarterback, compiling a 1-2 record in Moore's three games before Mahomes' return.

The veteran quarterback went undrafted in the 2007 NFL Draft but was signed by the Dallas Cowboys and went on to play for the Carolina Panthers and Miami Dolphins before signing with the Chiefs last season. In his limited role, Moore has shown that he is a capable backup and could have drawn interest from other teams, but instead chose to return to the Chiefs in a different capacity.

Kansas City begins its title defense on September 10 against the Houston Texans in the first game of the 2020 NFL season.
