Alex Smith appears to be off to the Washington Redskins in a blockbuster trade, likely paving the way for Patrick Mahomes to take over as the new Kansas City Chiefs starting quarterback. However, the Smith trade is not set in stone just yet. The deal can only be made official on March 14, so there’s still a chance it can be called off.

Mahomes seems to be well aware of this fact, which is likely why he spoke carefully regarding his current situation with the team.

“I know a ton’s been said over social media and things like that,” Mahomes said, via Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star. “But for me, all I can do right now is just work as hard as I can if any opportunity comes.”

Mahomes has shown a lot of maturity and sensible thinking by avoiding any statements that could be taken the wrong way. It’s certainly a promising sign given his upcoming role as the team’s presumptive QB of the future. Even though he's just finished his rookie year, he’s about to become the de facto leader of the team, and that means doing and saying the right things at all times.

It feels like just a matter of time before Mahomes does become the team’s starting quarterback and is subjected to the intense pressure and scrutiny to perform that goes with the job. But the Chiefs probably felt like he’s ready for that pressure, both on and off the field, which was likely why they agreed to trade Smith away.
