After a wild evening of bad news involving starting running back Kareem Hunt, the Kansas City Chiefs have officially made a massive move.

In an official statement on the Chiefs' website, the organization has announced that it is releasing Hunt, effective immediately.

Here is the statement from the team:

“Earlier this year, we were made aware of an incident involving running back Kareem Hunt. At that time, the National Football League and law enforcement initiated investigations into the issue. As part of our internal discussions with Kareem, several members of our management team spoke directly to him. Kareem was not truthful in those discussions. The video released today confirms that fact. We are releasing Kareem immediately.”

TMZ released video earlier in the day showing Hunt assaulting a woman at a Cleveland hotel back in February.

The Chiefs responded by sending Hunt home from their training facility, which then led to the NFL placing him on the Commissioner's Exempt list.

However, due to the worldwide backlash following the release of the video, it seemed inevitable that Kansas City would have no choice but to cut ties with its star running back.

Hunt rushed for 824 yards and seven touchdowns this season while also posting 26 receptions and seven scores.

Amid plenty of distractions and controversy, the Chiefs will now prepare to head to Oakland for a matchup with the Raiders.

Backup running back Spencer Ware will obviously move into an expanded role moving forward for a team that had Super Bowl aspirations prior to Hunt's dismissal.
