The Los Angeles Clippers remain one of the more intriguing teams in the NBA, as they not only shocked the NBA world by making the playoffs, but now look to be able to chase down one of the marquee free agents in this offseason. While the team can make a run at some high profile free agents, one position they reportedly won’t be going after is point guard.

According to a recent note from The Athletic’s Jovan Buha, the Clippers are “unlikely” to pursue a star point guard in free agency thanks to their belief in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the first-round guard that has blossomed into what looks to be a future star point guard. According to Buha, the Clippers have gone so far as to deem Gilgeous-Alexander “untouchable” in trade scenarios, and view him as one of the cornerstones of the franchise.

While this may be a surprise to some, anyone that watched the young guard play might not be too shocked. Gilgeous-Alexander was a heralded prospect coming into the draft, but exceeded all expectations in Los Angeles. There, he averaged 10.8 points, 3.3 assists, and 2.8 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game, all while getting just under 27 minutes per game.

His tenacity on defense and ability to knock down a shot (he shot 36.7% from three his rookie year) was well above his age, and in the playoffs against the Golden State Warriors, he shined even more. Throughout his first playoff series, Gilgeous-Alexander constantly impressed, even drawing praise from the likes of Draymond Green and Kevin Durant. With a huge offseason approaching, the Clippers no longer have to worry about finding their guard of the future, as he may already be on the team.
