Arizona State head football coach Herm Edwards has tested positive for COVID-19, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Edwards, previously the head coach of the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL, is in his third season at the collegiate level as head coach of the Sun Devils.

The former defensive back led Arizona State to a 7-6 record in his first season and a 8-5 mark in 2019, including a victory in the Sun Bowl.

Arizona State played its first game of the season against the 20th-ranked USC Trojans last Saturday, losing a 28-27 nail-biter after the Trojans scored 14 fourth-quarter points to earn a critical victory on opening weekend for Pac-12 play.

The Sun Devils were scheduled to face the California Golden Bears on Saturday. However, after Herm Edwards and a number of Arizona State staffers were positive, the game has since been canceled, per Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic.

This is a bad sign for the Pac-12, the last of the power conferences to resume action on the gridiron.

Realistically, the entirety of the “Power Five” has been susceptible to COVID-19, as one might expect given the rising number of cases around the country.

The Big Ten has had numerous issues from outbreaks in the Wisconsin program to cancelations this weekend, and the SEC also had to cancel multiple games, including the scheduled showdown between LSU and the No. 1-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.

Players and coaches have been susceptible, with the likes of ‘Bama head coach Nick Saban testing positive earlier this year.

A number of positive tests at ASU mark the first bump in the road for the Pac-12, and it comes early in the year.
