Carson Wentz might have been an alternative option for the Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts agreed to trade a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional second-round choice in 2022 to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Wentz, who is coming off a woeful 2020. But they had interest in another quarterback prior to making the play for Wentz.

Jim Ayello of The Indianapolis Star reports the Colts “checked in” on the availability of Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr. Indy was told Carr was “not available.”

There were rumors earlier this month suggesting the Raiders could look to acquire multiple first-round picks in exchange for Carr and subsequently package those picks to make a run at Deshaun Watson.

But with the Houston Texans making it widely known they have no plans to trade Watson anytime soon, it does not make much sense for the Raiders to move Carr.

The 29-year-old would likely have been a good fit in Indianapolis. Carr threw for 4,103 yards and 27 touchdowns this season, completing over 67 percent of his passes and posting a career-high 71.0 total QBR, per Pro Football Reference. He is also under contract through 2022, but does not carry a dead-cap penalty next season. In other words, the Colts could have simply moved on from Carr had things not gone as planned in 2021.

Instead, Indy will hope Wentz can rediscover some of his old magic under Frank Reich, who was his quarterbacks coach in Philly during his Pro Bowl season in 2017. The Colts also boast a balanced run game and one of the better offensive lines in football. Both should serve to benefit Wentz as he prepares for a new chapter.
