Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones has fended off rumors surrounding his team's quarterback situation with Dak Prescott and Andy Dalton.

Speaking 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, Jones claimed that acquiring the former Cincinnati Bengals QB has no bearing on the team's continued pursuit of signing Prescott to a long-term contract.

Per Ed Werder of ESPN:

The Cowboys made head waves when they signed Andy Dalton to a one-year deal. The move sparked speculations about where contract negotiations between Dallas and Dak Prescott lies as far as reaching an agreement. Some have argued that bringing in Dalton could be a leverage move to ink Prescott to a team-friendly deal, while others surmised that he's a safety net if Prescott leaves.

However, it seems like the Dalton acquisition is more about adding depth at the quarterback position for the Cowboys, and they are still moving forward with Prescott as their man under center for next season. It remains to be seen whether how long, and for how much Prescott will sign with Dallas, but for the time being, his starting position is safe.

Prescott is coming off a terrific 2019-20 campaign, throwing for 4,902 yards while completing 65.1 percent of his passes. He also tossed in 30 touchdowns for the year, even though Dallas finished with only an 8-8 record and missed the playoffs.

After failing to find a trade partner, the Bengals released Dalton in late April. With rumors swirling that there are multiple interests for the 32-year-old quarterback, he elected to return to his home state and signed with Dallas.
