The Dallas Cowboys surprised many last year by taking the NFC East by storm, and delivering a playoff berth to the fans on the back of a stellar defensive unit. One reason for how good the defense was: Byron Jones, who is currently recovering from an offseason hip surgery. According to the Pro Bowl cornerback, though, he’s aiming to be ready for training camp.

“Overall, rehab is going well. Working on it every day. I’m starting to do lower-body lifts,” Jones said (via the Cowboys’ site). “The frustrating part is I want to go, and I feel I can run. But I have to listen to the (athletic trainers), and so I’m taking my time, being patient and just doing what they’re telling me to do.”

The Cowboys have already begun working throughout the summer, and have a three-day minicamp coming up next week, Jones is preparing to be ready by the start of July’s training camp instead.

“Definitely. I want to be back at training camp,” Jones said. “I want to be back with my teammates and play in the preseason games. That’s the target.”

While Jones knows that the biggest key is getting healthy in time for the Cowboys’ season-opening game against the Giants, he also spoke to the media about his lack of offseason practice, noting that he feels behind thanks too missing out on OTAs.

“It’s weird because I’ve never gone into a football season without the whole preparatory phase – with the camps, the OTAs and stuff like that,” Jones said. “I’m missing most of that. That’s fine but it’s just one of those things that adds a new complexity to the chapter. It’s just another little piece of adversity that can make a pretty good story.”

Thankfully for the Cowboys, Jones doesn’t seem to want to rush himself back too early, and with only a month to go until training camp starts, the Cowboys seem perfectly fine waiting for their Pro Bowl cornerback to return.
