The Dallas Cowboys will meet with cornerback Byron Jones' reps on Friday, according to Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News.

The Cowboys are considered a long shot to re-sign Jones given the amount of money they will likely have to invest in fellow free agents Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper. Owner Jerry Jones has said that it is “not a given” that Jones is a goner, but he acknowledges that retaining him will be difficult.

“But it certainly is pretty plain to see that, when you have the players we have right now under contract, plus we have arguably three of the top free agents there are out there, and we have the prospects of this Collective Bargaining Agreement, that we’ve got some work to do,” said Jones. “That’s a real challenge.”

Jones is coming off of a 2019 campaign in which he played 15 games and logged 46 tackles, a forced fumble and six passes defended.

The 27-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Connecticut, was originally selected by Dallas in the first round (27th pick overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.

He immediately started during his rookie season, appearing in every contest and finishing with 66 tackles and eight passes defended.

Jones did not miss a game over the course of his first four years in the league and ultimately made the Pro Bowl in 2018 after totaling 67 tackles and 14 passes defended.

He has only tallied a pair of interceptions throughout his first five seasons, but there is no denying that Jones is one of the better cover corners in the NFL.
