Though Jason Garrett is not yet fired, the Dallas Cowboys have begun their head coach search. Along with Mike McCarthy, the Cowboys will bring-in Marvin Lewis for an interview, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.

The Cincinnati Bengals fired Lewis after the 2018 campaign. He didn't stay in the NFL in 2019, opting to join his friend Herm Edwards on the Arizona State staff as a special adviser. The Cowboys could be looking at the time away from the league as a good thing.

Marvin Lewis, 61, is a defensive-minded coach, an area the Cowboys need to improve in. After playing linebacker at Idaho State University, he worked his way up to the pros, starting his NFL career as a linebacker coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1992. He then found himself as the defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins before landing in Cincinnati in 2003.

Lewis immediately brought the Bengals out of the gutters in 2003, as his team did not record a losing record until 2007. In 16 seasons as head coach in Cincinnati, the Bengals won the AFC North four times and visited the playoffs seven times. He did not win one of those playoff games as head coach.

The Bengals fired Lewis after a 6-10 campaign in 2018. That season capped off a three-year run of Cincinnati not making the playoffs and finishing with a losing record. Ultimately, his inability to win playoff games as head coach began his demise. Time will tell if the Cowboys are good with that.

Though Lewis' teams struggled to win in the postseason, he did bring a once-reeling team immense success immediately. The Cowboys could be looking at that over his lack of success in games where it mattered most. However, their head coach search is far from over.
