Drafting a young quarterback talent with great potential isn’t new to the NFL. But when you’ve already got one up your sleeve, like with the Philadelphia Eagles, the move will definitely turn some eyes.

Much controversy has shrouded Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts over his selection (taken in the second round), especially since the move came even as the NFC East club had just extended their starting quarterback Carson Wentz’s contract, a little over a year ago.

One would think there would be some tension between the two, but Hurts is ready to put those rumors to rest. In an interview for Penn Live, the 21-year-old former Oklahoma Sooner has spoken up about his relationship with the veteran signal-caller.

“We’ve talked, we’ve texted, we’ve communicated … Feeling each other out and building that relationship. When we both get in the building, it’ll be even better for me to get reps with him and watch him and do those things, so I’m excited for when that time comes,” Hurts said.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hurts’ and fellow Eagle rookie Jalen Reagor’s “getting-to-know” activities and training were done virtually via Microsoft Teams.

Despite the rumors pitting the two against each other, Hurts insists he respects Wentz and is willing to learn from the veteran.

“During the offseason, it was great to sit in the meetings and hear him talk, see how he sees the game, just hear him talk … He’s very knowledgeable, what he’s doing on offense, and I just want to continue to learn and listen to those things and just soak it all in.”

Wentz has been impressive with the Eagles, but he hasn’t played consistently in the past three seasons due to injuries. Until the NFL season returns, it remains to be a mystery how the two quarterbacks would work together or if anyone’s position on the team is in question.
