The Philadelphia Eagles made headlines with their decision to take Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. There is now plenty of speculation regarding how quarterback Carson Wentz feels about the move.
Hurts certainly has the talent to emerge as a potential successor under center. Regardless, former Eagles quarterback Josh McCown does not think it will have too much of an impact on Wentz's psyche, via Bleacher Report's Adam Lefkoe:
“I don’t think so and here’s why, I go back to the last four weeks of the season last year,” said McCown when asked if fans should be worried about Wentz’s mindset. “When you can change the parts around you and continue to play at a high level and your level even goes up? Four-thousand yards without a receiver over 500 is incredible. I just thought, down the stretch, he played at such a high level, his confidence is off the charts.”
McCown served as Wentz's backup during the 2019 campaign and even filled in for him when he was knocked out of the NFC Wild Card against the Seattle Seahawks. The veteran got to witness firsthand just how confident he was feeling up to that point before the injury after leading the Eagles won four straight games to win the division and reach the playoffs following a 5-7 start.
Although Wentz may not be feeling the pressure of Hurts' arrival, the situation will certainly be a talking point in the years to come. After all, Philadelphia is all too familiar with the importance of shoring up a surplus of talent under center after winning a Super Bowl with quarterback Nick Foles. It appears the prospect of taking a promising, young talent in Hurts was simply too good to pass up on.
