One can imagine fans of the Baldur's Gate series quote Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson's most iconic line in professional wrestling.

“Finally Baldur's Gate has come back from the dead!”

Ok that sounded more like The Undertaker than The Rock but with the latest entry being developed, it seems that the Nostalgia that fans accumulated from the late 90s to early 2000s is slowly rejuvenated. It's been 16 years since the last Baldur's Gate game was released if you remove the enhanced edition of the second entry.

What's even more exciting is the release of the game's early access, giving more time for players to dig deep into the lore to further enhance their desire for the series' awaited return.

With the latest entry being developed, here are things that you need to know about this up-and-coming RPG adventure game.

THE DEVELOPERS

The torch in developing this critically acclaimed role-playing game was passed on to Larian Studios. This will be a monumental task for Larian as they'll have to live up to the expectations established by BioWare Studios, who are renowned for making the best role-playing games which included the first two Baldur's Gate games as well as the Mass Effect series.

Larian Studios has already made their mark in the role-playing genre with their Divinity Series. Their latest Divinity: Original Sin franchise have been well received by fans and critics alike. Given their reputation, they could either carry on the legacy established by Baldur's Gate or usurp the throne that they once inherited.

STORY

The game is set a century after its predecessors with the developers mentioning that the latest entry doesn't carry on from where the previous one left. This doesn't mean that the game will end up like the Final Fantasy series where every installment is a completely different setting, as the game is still based in the Dungeon's and Dragons lore.

The story begins where a group of protagonists were taken captive in a cephalopod looking ship, where a parasite was injected in their body. Suddenly the ship got attacked by a group of warriors and when the ship landed on a city, the remaining survivors joined forces to find a way to remove the parasite.

According to the developers, the game will feature a unique story that goes beyond the traditional approach of the previous entries. The demo has revealed an extremely promising set of dialogues that could entice the player to grind for hundreds of hours.

GAMEPLAY

Unlike the previous entries where the combat is focused on a point-and-click mechanic, the latest entry will follow a turn-based approach which Larian implemented in their Divinity games. Since the game follows this system, the player cannot just run away and dodge incoming attacks from opponents as he'll have to wait for his turn in order to make his move, increasing the overall difficulty.

The player is also blessed with abilities caused by the parasite implanted in them however the player has to be wary in controlling the parasite otherwise a gruesome death sequence will occur.

Unlike other RPG games where wearing a piece of equipment will not translate to a change in appearance, Baldur's Gate III offers a realistic approach where the player can now flesh out the character's overall appearance.

There are environmental hazards that the player could utilize such as falling debris or explosives. Not only do they harm your opponents as they can also inflict damage on you, thus caution is advised in using the environment.

If you're bored playing by yourself, the game features an online multiplayer mode where you will get the chance to form a party with other players online.

DEMO AND RELEASE

The game's initial demo has already been released where the player is given a 20-25 hour experience. One may conclude that the game's long demo time would signal that the game is approximately close towards release however the current state suffers from bugs and other technical issues. There are reports of broken graphical details, weird critical hit damages, and strange hand gestures from the characters.

Even though the game is currently suffering from its fair share of issues, the dialogue and gameplay mechanics are lauded by the community, signaling an optimistic viewpoint in the game's development. The early access of the game revealed a high community base on both Steam and GOG.com.

It remains a mystery if the game's release will follow an episodic format nor is it certain when will the final output be released, however the potential is already there to begin with.
