What will the New York Giants do about their quarterback situation this offseason? Well, indications are that Eli Manning will be back under center in 2019 and may be doing some mentoring, as well.

After Giants head coach Pat Shurmur said that he fully expects Manning to be back with the team next season, New York general manager Dave Gettleman pointed to the Kansas City Chiefs' method of grooming Patrick Mahomes as one model that the franchise might follow:

“The Kansas City model worked really well,” Gettleman said, according to Matt Lombardo of NJ Advance Media. “You can cite a number of models where they had a veteran guy and they drafted a young guy. At some point in time, the torch got passed and away everyone went. And it was a happy away, everyone went.”

Gettleman's comment seems to entail that the Giants will probably draft a quarterback with their first-round pick in April and have him learn under Manning for one season before turning him loose in 2020.

That is what the Chiefs did with Mahomes, who was a backup to Alex Smith in 2017. Kansas City then proceeded to trade Smith to the Washington Redskins last offseason, opening the door for Mahomes to take over as the starting signal-caller.

Of course, Mahomes then went on to lead the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game and earn an MVP award in the process after leading the league with 50 touchdown passes.

One name that keeps surfacing for the Giants is Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who is a New Jersey native.
