The NBA and its players have been actively involved in taking a stand on socially relevant causes and supporting various causes.

For the Miami Heat, their Miami Vice jerseys will be used to commemorate the victims of the recent Florida shooting. These jerseys will have the acronym MSD for Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the high school that was the venue of the recent tragic event that left 17 people dead.

The jersey patch will be included in the Heat jersey throughout the season.

The Heat are back from the All-Star break to face-off against the New Orleans Pelicans with the patches ready for the game.

As reported by the Sun Sentinel’s Ira Winderman, the Heat are also planning to have a moment of silence as a tribute to the victims before the Memphis Grizzlies game at the American Airlines Arena. This will be their first game in the arena since the shooting.

Dwyane Wade, who just returned to the Heat after a season and a half playing for the Chicago Bulls and the Cleveland Cavaliers, said that being with the Heat organization was something he was proud of for doing its part.

“The parents and the kids and the community have been very vocal,” Wade said. “They've pulled together so amazingly and that says, as a franchise, in this state, knowing that the kids that are no longer with us and the kids that are still dealing with this, we're they're favorite team, the majority of 'em, and to be able to bring awareness to what's going, to listen even more, and tune in to what they're saying and what they're doing, it's powerful. That's the kind of organization this is, so I'm happy to be a part of it.”

The Miami Vice jerseys were somewhat of a viral request from fans via Twitter and was released last January. As the official outfitter of the NBA, Nike came up with an alternate line called “City” jerseys. It was exactly what the Miami Heat needed to get the classic TV series a special jersey.
