Despite already having number of point guards in their lineup, the Miami Heat still signed Larry Drew II recently to give them more options in their backcourt during training camp. Terms of the deal were not disclosed per team policy, but it is believed that it could be for a two-way deal.

The 27-year-old UCLA product was part of the Team USA squad that won the gold medal in the recently concluded FIBA AmeriCup Championships in Argentina. He averaged decent numbers of 4.6 points, including 52.9 percent shooting from the field, 5.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.0 steals in 19.4 minutes per game.

Drew is a G-League veteran, having had three stints with the Sioux Falls Skyforce over the past four years. He also has experience playing overseas, appearing for AS Monaco of the LNB Pro A in France and BC Neptunas in Lithuania, as well as in the NBA, when he suited up in 12 games for the Philadelphia 76ers back in the 2014-15 season.

It will be a tall order for Larry Drew II to make the Heat’s final lineup, especially with the team already having Goran Dragic, Tyler Johnson, and Josh Richardson, but he can give the three aforementioned players a run for their money and could even make their coaching staff think twice on him if he plays solid basketball during training camp. Should he not make the cut, the Heat can send him to the G-League once again to gain even more experience and prepare him for another shot at making an NBA roster in the future.
