Charlotte Hornets rookie guard Malik Monk’s ankle injury was worse than initially thought. As the Charlotte Observer’s Rick Bonnell reports after speaking with head coach Steve Clifford, Monk still hasn’t fully recovered from the “significant injury” which he suffered earlier this summer.

Monk, who was drafted No. 11 overall by the Hornets in this year’s draft, did not participate in the Summer League due to that ankle injury.

The incoming rookie was one of the Hornets' marquee offseason additions along with Dwight Howard. He averaged just under 20 points per game in college as a freshman for Kentucky last season, and is expected to provide some much-needed offense for the Hornets off the bench.

Monk could reportedly see time as a backup point guard in the preseason after offseason signing Michael Carter-Williams underwent surgery on both knees. But with Monk’s recovery from his ankle injury not progressing as quickly as anticipated, even his status for preseason remains uncertain.

If Malik Monk and Michael Carter-Williams do continue to miss time once the season begins, the Hornets could be forced to use starting shooting guard Nicolas Batum as their emergency backup point guard behind All-Star Kemba Walker.
