Initial reports say that Charlotte Hornets guard Malik Monk will be out for the Summer League due to a fractured thumb. However, another medical review revealed that Monk's thumb wasn't as worse as first reported.

Per NBA.com, the injury — which Monk sustained during Charlotte’s Summer League game against Oklahoma City on July 6 — was not a fracture and thereby, the 20-year-old is listed as day-to-day. A prior diagnosis said that he'll be out for six to eight weeks.

Monk was the 11th overall pick in last year's draft. In 63 games last season, he averaged 6.7 points and 1.4 assists in 13.6 minutes per game.

Malik Monk struggled in his rookie year in the NBA, This season, however, he is expected to have a bigger role on offense. According to the Hornets' newly minted head coach James Borrego, Monk has the potential to be an elite shooter. Per Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer:

“Malik Monk is a major player for us next (season). I knew he was a shooter but being up close to him is impressive. This guy has a chance to be an elite shooter, a very consistent shooter. Someone we can play through for different stretches of a game.”

Assistant coach Jay Hernandez echoed Borrego's statements, adding that he also wants Monk to make the right plays:

“He’s one of the guys on the court at all times who can get his own shot, create his own shot. We want him not only do that, but make the right play: finding teammates when they’re open, figuring out the way to get off the ball, shoot it or drive it in half a second or less.”
