James Caan has died at 82 years of age. The legendary actor’s family shared the message on Twitter that he passed away Wednesday evening.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time,” reads the family’s statement. No cause of death has been revealed.

James Caan is most well-known for his role as Santino “Sonny” Corleone in “The Godfather”, for which he was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category. The Bronx, New York native also starred as Paul Sheldon in the movie adaptation of Steven King’s book “Misery,” as Walter Hobbs in “Elf” alongside Will Ferrell and as Brian Piccolo in “Brian’s Song” alongside Billy Dee Williams.

Caan first appeared on the big screen in 1963 in Billy Wilder’s “Irma la Douce” and has remained in acting up until his death. He had plans to work with Francis Coppola for his “Megalopolis” project.

In addition to his 1972 Oscar nominee, Caan won four Golden Globes and was nominated for an Emmy award in the Outstanding Single Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role category for his role in “Brian’s Song.”
