The departure of Gordon Hayward over the offseason has created a great need within the Utah Jazz organization to keep its remaining core group together and locked in for years.

However, this may not necessarily be the case with fourth-year guard Rodney Hood as Tony Jones of The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that it is unlikely he will agree to a new contract extension with the Jazz prior to the start of the regular season this upcoming week.

Rodney Hood and the Utah Jazz will not come to an agreement on a contract extension, barring a last minute change, sources tell The Salt Lake Tribune, clearing the way for Hood to become a restricted free agent next summer.

Although the two sides won't agree to an agreement on a new deal, the Jazz still holds the benefit of matching any offer that is presented to the 24-year-0ld in free agency next summer as he will be a restricted free agent.

The reasoning behind the lack of commitment from the Jazz may be due to the team wanting to see if Rodney Hood can handle the increased offensive responsibility. If Hood is able to show that he can excel in that new role, there will likely be no hesitation from the front office to work out a lucrative long-term deal.

Ultimately, the ball appears to be in his court to show to the Jazz that he can be a player whom they can build with over the next several years.
