Trumaine Johnson came to New York as a big free agent splash, but failed to live up to expectations in his first year with the Jets, whether is was a nagging right quad strain or being benched for the season finale.

For the season, Johnson had four interceptions, including a pick-six, but had a career low five passes defensed in 10 games.

Gang Green understandably wasn't too thrilled with the first installment of a five-year, $72.5 million deal it gave to Johnson a year ago, but there's optimism the cornerback can turn things around under new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

Johnson had his best season under Williams with the Rams back in 2015 (seven interceptions, 17 passes defensed, 71 tackles).

His best years were when we were together,” Williams said. “He’s really motivated. He understands me. I understand him. It’s my job to try to help him be the best he can be. He’s excited. I’ve been excited about the work that he has put in here. … There’s a good familiarity there. I can’t wait to get back in games together, because he and I have had some really good moments together.”

New York's secondary heads into the season with plenty of questions, but Johnson will be the clear-cut favorite for the No. 1 corner job. Per reports, he showed up to camp in great shape and looking impressive. He’s good enough to have a bounce back campaign to help the Jets break their eight-year playoff drought. So it's important that he plays up to his potential.
