As recently as a couple weeks ago, the New York Jets did not have a schedule set to meet with Sam Darnold. But they’ve apparently decided to change that. They are now set to bring in the highly-rated quarterback prospect for a visit this week, as Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reports.

The Jets have USC QB Sam Darnold slated to come to New Jersey for a Top 30 visit in the coming days, per source. He wasn't on the schedule a couple weeks back, but is now. Darnold's also visiting the Giants this week.

The Jets currently possess the No. 3 pick in the draft, which they traded up to get from the Indianapolis Colts. They are widely tipped to pick a top quarterback prospect in that slot. However, Darnold is not expected to be there as an option for them. In recent days, the USC quarterback has been touted to go either No. 1 to the Cleveland Browns or No. 2 to the New York Giants.

But even if he is unlikely to slip beyond No. 2, it still makes sense for the Jets to do their due diligence on Darnold just in case he drops on draft night. If Darnold does somehow fall to the Jets’ lap, it’d be hard to see New York not taking him unless he for some reason doesn’t impress them in their upcoming meeting.

While the four consensus top quarterback prospects aren’t perfect, Darnold appears to have the fewest glaring flaws of the bunch, which is likely why he’s being tipped to go within the first couple of picks. After taking their sweet time to set up a meeting, the Jets may be set to find out for themselves just why Darnold has been so highly rated.
