The Sacramento Kings are continuously looking for a point guard they can trade for to add depth to the position. After losing Rajon Rondo to free agency this summer, it leaves them with last year's back-up Darren Collison, and newly-signed Ty Lawson to share the minutes at the one spot.

With Rudy Gay asking to be traded and openly saying that he will opt-out of his contract next year, it appears to be an obvious move for the Kings to make: look for a taker for Gay in exchange for a point guard.

It may seem simple to do, but so far, they haven't been successful in finding a trade partner. However, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical recently reported that they were already close to swapping the small forward for Oklahoma City Thunder‘s Cameron Payne, before he broke his foot.

“Sacramento has been determined to find a young point guard to run its team. The Kings were seriously engaged with Oklahoma City on a Rudy Gay deal that would have included the Thunder’s second-year point guard, Cameron Payne, but those talks stalled after Payne broke his foot in September, league sources said.”

Wojnarowski also added that Sacramento is also pursuing Minnesota Timberwolves' Ricky Rubio who appears to be dispensable after they selected Kris Dunn as the fifth pick in this year's draft:

“The Sacramento Kings are the most determined of several teams expressing interest in finding a pathway to a Rubio deal, league sources said, but Minnesota president and coach Tom Thibodeau is reluctant to move Rubio – outside of bringing back a no-brainer package, of course – until Dunn’s progress illustrates this season that he’s ready to fully take over the team.”

Another option the Kings' are open to is the reported possible trade for Miami Heat point guard Goran Dragic, but Pat Riley and company so far have not shown enough interest to it.

With the discussions with the Heat and Timberwolves looking unlikely to push through, it will be interesting to see if the Kings will resume negotiations with the Thunder now that Payne is closer to making his return which will most likely be in two to three week's time.
