Kemba Walker has been out of the New York Knicks' rotation for some time now, and obviously, it was a huge slap that he didn't see coming.
The veteran guard and former All-Star recently broke his silence on the Knicks' decision to boot him out of the rotation after their early season struggles. He admitted he was hurt and it was a “tough” situation for him, especially since he is a competitor who had high hopes of helping the New York franchise elevate their standings in the East after their 2021 playoff run.
Furthermore, Walker shared that he was “blindsided” by the decision, though he acknowledged that it must have been hard of head coach Tom Thibodeau and the Knicks to deliver the rather depressing update.
“Yeah, anyone would have been. It’s not easy on his end or anyone’s end. It’s not something easy to tell anyone,” Walker said, per Barbara Barker of Newsday.
It remains to be seen what will happen to Kemba Walker after the Knicks' decision to sit him out. There have been rumors that he could be traded, but the 31-year-old guard himself isn't sure whether he would stay in New York and be ready when the team needs him or he's just waiting for the right trade.
“Not sure. We’ll see….it depends on how things go moving forward. only the future knows,” Walker said when asked if he would like to come off the bench for the ‘Bockers or play somewhere else.
Prior to being benched, Walker was averaging career-lows in points (11.7), rebounds (2.6) and assists (3.1). The Knicks have largely struggled defensively when he's on the floor, although things haven't changed much for them even after Cardiac Kemba was booted out–going 1-3 in that span.
