Jimmy Garoppolo was one of the handful of injuries that the San Francisco 49ers endured in their Week 2 victory over the New York Jets. Even though Garoppolo's return doesn't seem far away, Kyle Shanahan doesn't envision him being ready to play in Week 3 versus the New York Giants.

“I’ll be surprised if Jimmy gets back later in the week,” Shanahan said, via Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle. “Nick is ready to go. He got a lot of playing time with us in 2018, and that prepared him for moments like this.”

Amid San Francisco's blowout win over the Jets, they experienced a bevy of injuries to marquee players on their roster. Nick Bosa would suffer a torn ACL, immediately ruling him out for the rest of the 2020 season.

Besides Bosa, Raheem Mostert and Garoppolo both sustained injuries that kept them sidelined for the second half of the game. After Sunday's contest, Shanahan uttered that he doesn't believe Garoppolo's ankle injury is going to cause him to miss an extended period of time.

Still, at the least, Garoppolo is shaping up to miss the team's next matchup with the Giants. With Garoppolo not expected to suit up, Nick Mullens is likely to get the nod to start.

Back in 2018, as an undrafted rookie out of Southern Miss, Mullens started in eight games for the 49ers due to an injury to Garoppolo. Mullens would perform modestly, throwing for 2,277 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in his eight starts.

Of course, Shanahan would prefer to have Garoppolo operating the offense in Week 3 versus the Giants. But while he recovers from an ankle ailment, Shanahan is confident that Mullens can fill in admirably at quarterback.
