Even with the level of talent NBA players have, they still look to their families, friends and fellow players for additional motivation to help them perform better on the court. For Brandon Ingram, he gets his regular dose of encouraging words from a player he was compared a lot to before he entered the NBA.

The Los Angeles Lakers forward shared recently, via Michael Lee of Yahoo! Sports, that Kevin Durant sends him motivational messages from time to time. Although he did not discuss specifically what the Golden State Warriors star tells him, he said that it has made him work even harder.

“[Durant] is always sending me motivational things. Though some things may need to be censored,” Ingram told Yahoo Sports. “He sees a lot in me. He actually told me to block out everything and be the killer that I am. To get a lot of guys around this league that see what I can be, it does nothing but make me want to work harder.”

Having similar physique and playing the same natural position, the Duke product was thought of by many as the next Durant. Although they also have differences when it comes to their skill sets, Ingram has shown glimpses of his true potential last season, and that he has the ability to become a future star in the NBA.

If Ingram can continue using Durant’s words of encouragement as inspiration to be the best basketball player that he can be, it won’t be surprising if he can also reach the same level of success he’s had in his career. There is no doubt that the 20-year-old is very talented and should he find a way to become more effective in his sophomore season, he could receive more praise not just from Durant, but from other great players in the league as well.
