Former NBA Coach of the Year Sam Mitchell believes the Los Angeles Lakers should acquire DeMar DeRozan from the San Antonio Spurs.

Mitchell, who won the 2006-07 Coach of the Year Award with the Toronto Raptors, believes DeRozan on the Lakers would be a “game-changer.”

The Lakers and Miami Heat will have the shortest offseason in NBA history with the 2020-21 campaign starting on Dec. 22. LeBron James, though he's built like Superman, will probably sit out a bunch of games to begin the campaign since he's going to turn 36 in December.

With that being said, the Lakers need a third dynamic scorer next to James and Anthony Davis since the season is starting so early, and DeMar DeRozan certainly fits that bill. While James is either sitting out games or resting on the bench, the Lakers can run their offense through DeRozan and Davis, two All-Stars who can score 20-plus points a night in their sleep.

DeRozan has a player option for the 2020-21 season. If he declines it, the Spurs guard will become an unrestricted free agent. Since he's from California, DeRozan would obviously love to play for the Lakers, who won the 2020 championship in six games over the Heat.

It's going to be fascinating to see what happens with DeRozan. He averaged 22.1 points per game for the Spurs in 2019-20 while shooting 53.1 percent from the field.
