The Los Angeles Lakers decided to give their defense a boost this year by bringing in a veteran center Andrew Bogut. In a short time with the team, Bogut has already made an impression with some solid play during scrimmages in practice.

Along with a few other Lakers teammates singing the praises of the veteran journeyman, Larry Nance Jr. spoke about Bogut's presence in practice and how impressive he's been on defense thus far, especially with his shot-blocking ability.

“He's an awesome shot-blocker,” Nance said of Bogut. “We were scrimmaging yesterday; I think he had three or four trips down and back where he was just getting offensive rebounds. Blocking every shot they shot. He's a bigger presence than we've had around here in a long time.”

At this point, it is unclear what kind of role Bogut will have with the team moving forward. The Lakers currently have a crowded frontcourt at the center position with Brook Lopez, Ivica Zubac, and rookie Thomas Bryant. Although Bryant likely won't play much and could see a lot of time in the G League, Lopez is the starter and Zubac may very well end up being his backup.

As for Bogut, it remains to be seen how much Luke Walton and company will get the veteran on the floor. His defense may be what sets him apart from the other centers on the team, and that could thrust him into the backup role if they aren't satisfied with what Zubac brings to the table.

It'll be interesting to see how Walton and his coaching staff decides to use as the team begins the 2017-18 season on Thursday against the L.A. Clippers.
