The Detroit Lions signed Breshad Perriman in the offseason as part of a complete overhaul of their receiving corps. Just five months later, the Lions are pulling the plug on the Perriman experiment and cutting him, according ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Perriman only got a one-year, $3 million deal, so it's not like this was an expensive mistake, but Detroit certainly didn't expect things to go this way. The 27-year-old had a decent season with the New York Jets in 2020, catching 30 passes for 505 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games.

However, Perriman struggled in training camp and the preseason. He also dealt with a hip injury during the summer, which set him back. Lions head coach Dan Campbell had recently hinted that this move was a possibility, but it's still pretty shocking that it came to this given the team's current situation.

With Perriman a goner, the Lions will be relying Tyrell Williams, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Quintez Cephus at the wide receiver spot. Geronimo Allison, Tom Kennedy, Victor Bolden and Kalif Raymond are battling for the other wideout spots on the roster.

This isn't the most inspiring group of wide receivers for newcomer Jared Goff to work with after his trade from the Los Angeles Rams. Detroit lost Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones Jr., Danny Amendola and several others at wide receiver in the offseason.

Tight end T.J. Hockenson will be an important target for Goff after he caught 67 balls for 723 yards and six scores last season.
