NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced that June 19 will be recognized a a staff holiday in honor of Juneteenth. It appears the Detroit Lions are now the latest team to get in on the action.

The Lions announced that their offices will be closed to honor the holiday, via the team's official Twitter:

“The Detroit Lions and Ford Field are establishing the observance of Juneteenth as a permanent organizational holiday and closing their offices Friday, June 19. Staff will be encouraged to use the day as an opportunity to reflect and further their awareness around racial inequality and social injustice.”

Juneteenth marks the effective end of slavery in the United States. The Lions will now be joining the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers as the teams to declare the date a holiday, bringing awareness to this significant day in history.

It has been deemed a foregone conclusion that player protests during the 2020 NFL season will occur in a continued effort to raise awareness about racial injustice. The NFL has since changed its tune and have offered players its support when it comes to using the league's platform to assist in their efforts.

Of course, it is imperative that teams put the onus on themselves to recognize the issues at hand and the steps being taken to help spark a change. Although the fight may be far from over, it will be interesting to see if the Lions are only the latest team with plans to officially recognize Juneteenth as a holiday and that more follow suit.
