Detroit Lions wide receiver Jermaine Kearse suffered a broken leg against the New England Patriots in Thursday's preseason game, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The injury occurred on the fifth offensive snaps for the Lions. Kearse was blocking on the play until his leg awkwardly got hit by a defender.

A cart came out to take Kearse off the field. A trainer on-site covered the gruesome injury with a towel before securing his leg with an air cast. He also suffered “associated” injuries to his ankle, according to Rapoport. He will likely miss the entirety of the 2019 season.

The Lions signed Kearse on June 6th to compete with Danny Amendola for a starting slot job. The receiver is known around the NFL for his circus catch against the Patriots in Super Bowl 49. He won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks in 2014 against the Denver Broncos.

For his career, Kearse has recorded a total of 255 receptions for 3,290 yards and 17 touchdowns. He played his first five seasons with the Seahawks before being shipped off to the New York Jets for defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson. In his first season, he tallied 65 receptions for 810 yards and five touchdowns. In his second, 37 catches for 371 yards and one touchdown.

With Kearse out, the Lions will have to go to another route for the position. Detroit has Tommylee Lewis, Andy Jones, Brandon Powell, Chris Lacy, Tom Kennedy, Travis Fulgham, and Jonathan Duhart at the position behind Kearse.

Preseason injuries are the worst; we sincerely wish Kearse the best in his recovery.
