The Los Angeles Chargers nailed the NFL draft again. After selecting Justin Herbert with the sixth pick in last year's draft, the Chargers posted a 7-9 record. While it wasn't a playoff appearance, we quickly found out Justin Herbert is a franchise quarterback. He threw for over 4,000 yards and had 36 total touchdowns breaking the rookie record. The Chargers clearly made it a point to improve the protection of the future star quarterback in the off-season. Through the draft and free agency, they have set themselves up for success in the near future.

In free agency the Chargers brought in Pro Bowl center Corey Linsley. The former Green Bay Packer will instantly elevate the offensive line's production. He is one of if not the best center in football and he will be paired with former teammate Bryan Bulaga on the line. They also were able to bring in tight end Jared Cook to give Herbert another target.

Chargers 1st round

Chargers offensive lineman Rashawn Slater: A+

What a great draft pick by the Chargers. They get a blind side protector for Herbert and the second best tackle in the class. Penei Sewell was the number one ranked tackle but Slater will likely be a better day one player. He possesses great movement at the point of attack along with his fast reads and adjustments will make him a great tackle. He has proven he can compete with the best of pass rushers when he played well against Chase Young in college.

2nd round

Chargers cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.: A-

The Chargers fill a position of need at cornerback. After cutting Casey Hayward Jr. in the off-season and trading away Desmond King II at the deadline, they needed to add at this position. Asante Samuel Jr. is the son of former pro bowl cornerback Asante Samuel. Samuel Jr. plays with great technique and is great at crowding receivers. He also has the ability to tackle a receiver quickly after the catch. That ability will be vital as he will play against Kansas City Chiefs star receiver Tyreek Hill twice a season.

3rd round

Chargers wide receiver Josh Palmer: B-

Los Angeles adds a playmaker to the offense. Palmer is a receiver who plays under great control and is great at gaining leverage. He may not be a top target but his skill set gives the Charges much needed depth at receiver.

Chargers tight end Tre' McKitty: B

Chargers bring in potential replacement for Hunter Henry. After Henry signed with the New England Patriots in free agency, the Chargers needed to add a tight end. They brought in Jared Cook in free agency but McKitty adds more depth to the position. Cook is also 34 years old so the McKitty could be the tight end for the future in Los Angeles. His 6 foot-5 and 245 pound frame gives Herbert a big target to throw to. McKitty will instantly make an impact as a redzone target for Herbert and the Chargers.

4th round

Chargers linebacker Chris Rumph II: B

The Chargers bring in a pass rusher to put alongside Joey Bosa. Rumph II's effort and intensity as a pass rusher shows every time he steps on the field. He consistently never gives up on plays allowing him to disrupt plays regularly. His lateral quickness allows him to gain an early advantage when rushing the passer. Rumph could see some playing time and make an impact across from Bosa next season.

5th round

Chargers offensive lineman Brenden Jaimes: B-

Adding more depth to the offensive line is never a bad option. While Jaimes will likely serve as a backup for the Chargers, he can play both tackle positions providing great depth. He is also a very durable player is he started 40 consecutive games for Nebraska. His great footwork and durability will allow him to be a solid offensive lineman at the NFL level.

6th round

Chargers linebacker Nick Niemann: B-

RECOMMENDED (Article Continues Below)

Another solid player to bring on the team in Niemann. He is another player who will likely be a backup but will likely make a great impact in that role. He has great speed and quickness which allows him to take down fast running backs. He is a excellent tackler and will serve as a good backup for the Chargers.

Chargers running back Larry Rountree III: B+

Chargers get a steal in round 6. Rountree III was projected to go in the 5th round and they got him in the middle of the 6th. He may not be a running back one in the NFL but he could make a solid running back 2. His burst and quickness will allow him to be a good change of pace in the backfield for the Chargers.

7th Round

Chargers defensive back Mark Webb: C+

With all the injuries the Chargers have had over the years, adding more corners is never a bad option. Webb is a good tackler who will take on bigger players with no hesitation. He will be a solid special team player if nothing else for the Chargers.

With back to back great drafts, the Los Angeles Chargers are set up for the future.
